Dale Deraps' son, a Marine, was killed in action in 2006. His son's death inspired Deraps to honor other Americans killed in the line of duty.

As stated on the Honor and Remember website, the flag serves as “a visible reminder to all Americans of the lives lost in defense of our national freedoms.” This flag is now the state's official emblem for those who have been killed in the line of duty.
