Plants cover former crop fields in Overton Bottoms

Acres of weedy, herbaceous plants cover what were once crop fields in the Overton Bottoms section of the Big Muddy National Wildlife Refuge in this July 17 photo. After significant flooding in 1993 and 1995, many farmers along the Missouri River flood plain sold their land to government agencies such at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
