ILLUSTRATION: Two types of Missouri mussels to get federal protection

The Neosho mucket mussel and the rabbitsfoot mussel will soon get federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. It will now be illegal to possess, kill, harvest or harm them. They can be identified by growth lines, shell color and color rays. The mussels are indicators of water quality.
