TAX LEVY ISSUE

Tom Rose
[IN-DEPTH PROFILE]

With almost a year’s service as an appointee to the Columbia School Board, veterinarian Tom Rose wants a full three-year term. Experienced as a business owner and from working in a variety of community and children’s groups, Rose wants to put emphasis on early childhood programs.

“I bring to the board a good feeling of what the teachers experience in the classroom,” Rose said. “I have, especially through the early childhood portion of it, expanded my knowledge of what the educational needs of the community are."

Rose’s work with First Chance for Children motivates him to focus on early education and develop programs for “at-risk” children.

Rose said one of his goals is to increase “the availability of quality early childhood programs for all parents, but we know there’s a real need for what we call the ‘at-risk’ children,” Rose said. “They don’t have the finances or the materials to provide quality experiences for their growing child.”

Rose has also pressed for greater openness and trust among the board, the public and the media.

CCTA survey response
In a survey conducted by teachers and parents groups, here is part of Rose’s response to this question: What budget issues and solutions do you see for the Columbia Public Schools in the next five years?

"I believe that a budgeting goal should be to avoid deficit spending through improved and more accurate estimation of actual expected income and expenses. Evaluation of expenses should include an assessment of the essential role of all support staff, although it may very well be determined that there are few areas where this support is not contributing to providing the best environment for our teachers and opportunities for learning for our students."
