TAX LEVY ISSUE

Rosie Tippin
[IN-DEPTH PROFILE]

Retired educator Rosie Tippin’s love of education and children moved her to run for a seat on the Columbia School Board. As a former principal of West Boulevard Elementary School, Tippin thinks she has the experience to serve.

If elected, Tippin wants to focus on four goals: improving the quality of education in Columbia Public Schools, making sure the available funds are being spent wisely, emphasizing closing the achievement gap among students, and improving communication between the district and its patrons.

Tippin also wants to emphasize the importance of giving students an opportunity to succeed regardless of their backgrounds. “We don’t have to accept children of low income not succeeding because they can,” she said.

Tippin said she isn’t sure whether an increase to the property tax levy is needed, saying, “I want to be able to look at what will happen if we don’t get it and what we can do if we do get it.”

CCTA survey response
In a survey conducted by teachers and parents groups, here is part of Tippin ’s response to this question: What budget issues and solutions do you see for the Columbia Public Schools in the next five years?

“Assuring that our students receive the best education possible in a time in which the economy is in a state of flux. Emphasis must be placed in the services that will allow Columbia to continue to produce students that are well rounded, challenged and successful. We must find ways to continue to close the academic gap as well as provide for programs such as EEE (Extended Education Experiences).”
