Jenean Thompson, a Columbia public defender, carries case documents on her way to court on Thursday. According to Thompson, an experienced public defender can handle up to 150 cases a year, though the public defenders in Columbia may face many more next year because of staff transfers and medical leave.

"Maudelle," circa 1937-38, was sculpted by African-American artist Beulah Ecton Woodard. The subject, Maudelle Bass Weston, served as a subject for many artists, but Woodard's piece is the only known sculpture.

Vaughn, like other retailers contacted by The Missourian, said that bad weather has slowed sales over the past few days, but he is confident that last-minute shoppers will make up for lost business.
