Free vision screenings in Spanish at health department

The Boone County Health Department, in partnership with the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation, is administering vision screenings in Spanish.

One disease the screenings test for is glaucoma, which can damage optic nerve fibers and visual fields. Tamara Oberbeck, a test administrator, said it’s especially important for Hispanic adults to get tested.

Screenings are free and held at 6 p.m. every Monday through July 18 at the health department.

High school basketball coaches bring teams to Missouri summer camp

Chinese Folk Music Orchestra performs at MU

In a concert for children Friday morning, The Chinese Folk Music Orchestra of Shanghai Normal University played at Jesse Auditorium. Yichu Zhu played "Horseracing" by Haihuai Huang with an Erhu, a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, also known as the Chinese violin. A separate ceremony took place the same morning to welcome a Confucius Institute to MU.

Charles Blow's speech

Wednesday night at Memorial Union, Charles Blow, an accomplished columnist for the New York Times, gave a speech in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. His speech covered King’s dedication to political change. Blow also spoke about the lack of people's political knowledge in today's society.

Composer W. Thomas McKenney shown in his office on Dec. 15 at the Fine Arts Annex on the MU campus. McKenney teaches composition and music theory at MU, and serves as the director of electronic music studies.

Playwright David Crespy is shown Dec. 14 at Rhynsburger Theatre. Crespy founded MU's Writing for Performance program, and his research includes theater history, new play development, and dreamwork for playwrights. Dreamwork is a type of writing that encourages using dreams as a template for plays.

Sager's typical method is to begin with a color and a collage, go over those with a wash of roofing tar, then use a palette knife to scrape on and off oil paint. Distributing food to pantries

The Food Bank supplies food to pantries in central and northeast Missouri, including several in Columbia.
