John Bush, 58, has been picking up trash along Garth Avenue between Broadway and Business Loop 70 East for the past two to three years. He uses a screw at the end of a bamboo stick to pick up the trash. "I just like a clean town," Bush says.

From corner to corner, Oxford, Miss., is rich with history and tradition, deeply rooted in football. Missouri fans take time to experience the local culture Friday before Saturday's showdown with Ole Miss.
The Missouri volleyball team clinched the SEC title Friday after defeating Mississippi State. The Tigers remain undefeated at 32-0. They played Friday in front of a record crowd of 7,789 and will take home the first SEC championship for a Missouri team. The Bulldogs were defeated in three sets, 25-19, 25-16, 25-17.

Missouri women's basketball took on Southeast Missouri State on Thursday at Mizzou Arena. Missouri outscored Southeast Missouri State in the second half to earn a 62-57 win.
Hickman's men's basketball players begin their first week of practice before the season. Players on the team are determined to outdo last season's 27-3 record.
Rock Bridge High School students dined on barbecue chicken and pulled pork sandwiches Thursday as part of Columbia Public School's new food trailer program. The trailer, which will visit other high schools in the district, is intended to offer more food options and to reduce crowding in the high schools' cafeterias.
The Boone County Cyber Crimes Task Force is fighting an increasing number of child pornography cases. Detective Andy Anderson coordinates the Cyber Crimes Unit Task Force. Anderson began investigating Internet crimes in 1999 before joining the Cyber Crimes Unit task force started in 2007. The unit serves seven counties in mid-Missouri. Anderson estimates that everyone in the unit has looked at thousands of pictures of abused children as part of their work.

The Columbia chapter of Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty organized a protest at Boone County Courthouse on Tuesday. The group protested the execution of serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin, who was granted a stay of execution Tuesday night because of a pending lawsuit challenging Missouri's execution law.
The Boone County Fire Protection District responded to a fire in rural Boone County on Tuesday. The home was a total loss.
Derek Provance and Alex Madinger work together at the Gauntlet initiative. Provance attends MU as a computer science engineer, and Madinger graduated as a mechanical engineer. They have known each other for three years and started building their business in August. The business has yet to be launched.
Curt Riley has been enjoying his first year coaching the Fr. Tolton Catholic High School girls basketball team. This season adds to a 30-year coaching legacy inspired by his late father.

Norleen Nosri presented her recent artwork, a set of dozens of ceramic teacups, Monday at city hall. The teacups are meant to represent the members of Columbia's community, she said.

In order to better accommodate city residents, Columbia Transit has proposed a redesigned bus system called CoMo Connect that would add routes, decrease wait times and eliminate Wabash Station as the system's sole hub.

Even though ethanol was pitched as an environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline, the opposite has been true: Production of the corn-based fuel has wiped out millions of acres of conservation land and polluted water supplies, The Associated Press found out.
