Columbia skateboard enthusiasts took to Cosmopolitan Park to participate in Shred Fest. The free event, which went from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, was aimed at encouraging safe and healthy choices.

On Friday, participants prepared for the Art in the Park festival at Stephens Lake Park. The festival, which will feature a variety of events including art galleries, live music, magic shows and food, is aimed at encouraging the arts in Columbia.
Boone County National Bank presented the 11th Annual Voluntary Action Center’s Spring Into Action, which was held on May 22 at the University Club.

On Saturday, May 19, six bakers competed in the 2012 Battle of the Bakers to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri.
Maries County Chaplain Mike Bonham is running for Osage County Sheriff. The way Bonham sees it, ministers are in the world to make a difference, and he said that being sheriff would be a way to use his God-given potential to take on societal problems.

Ken and Linda Brokamp celebrate the victory of their daughter, Beth, and her team for bowling at the 2012 Special Olympics State Summer Games at AMF Town & Country Lanes on Wednesday. Beth and her parents, Ken and Linda Brokamp, won the Family of the Year Award at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Special Olympics State Summer Games.
This was the inaugural year for Mid-Mo Yo Yo Expo, a yo-yo contest, designed to bring together players from Columbia, St. Louis, Kansas City and surrounding areas.
Brothers Chuck Graham and Drew Graham were both injured in car accidents, and Drew Graham is treated for bipolar disorder, a mental illness his father also struggled with.

Columbia residents celebrate Memorial Day Monday afternoon at the Veterans Barbecue. The event was originally slated to take place at Saint Luke Church but was moved to a volunteer's house.
Only part of the Brookside on College apartments remains standing Monday after a fire the day before at College Avenue and Walnut Street in downtown Columbia.
A morning parade in downtown Columbia kicked off the day's Memorial Day observances.
Americans observed Memorial Day with ceremonies at the Arlington National Cemetery, parades and by placing flags at the grave markers of veterans.

The Missouri softball team played LSU on Sunday in game two of the Columbia super regional. The game remained tied at 1-1 until Missouri scored four runs in the 12th inning and moved on to game three. Later, Missouri ended its season with a loss in game three.
Pilots of all ages made the trip to the Columbia Regional Airport for the Salute to Veterans air show Sunday.
The Columbia Fire Department responded early Sunday to a fire at the Brookside on College student apartments at Walnut Street and College Avenue. It took 40 firefighters about 90 minutes to bring the fire under control, according to the department.
Firefighters Sunday morning worked to put out a fire that heavily damaged the Brookside on College apartments under construction at College Avenue and Walnut Street in downtown Columbia.
