Smrithi Susan Jacob plays Rummikub with a seniors Sherill Mikles, Sherrill Mikles and Veena Sahota Thursday at the Columbia Senior Activity Center. Jacob, a recent immigrant from India, goes to the Senior Center each week to keep busy while looking for employment in Columbia.

The Hot Summer Nights concert series got underway with a "Strike up the Band"-inspired performance by the Missouri Symphony Orchestra at Stephens Lake Park.
Battle High School students are in their first week of classes, with 465 students starting summer school.
The Padres played the Cardinals on May 29 and the Tigers on Wednesday in a Columbia T-ball league at the Daniel Boone Little League Field.

For 21 years, A Call to Serve International has raised money and donated medication and medical supplies to the country of Georgia. Its latest shipment to the country left this week.

Three Missouri track and field athletes will be competing in the NCAA tournament this week in Eugene, Ore. Missouri freshman Markesh Woodson will compete Wednesday. Laura Roxberg will compete in the 1,500-meter race Thursday. Missouri sophomore Kearsten Peoples will compete in the shot put Saturday.

Battle High School softball players won their first scrimmage 8-2 Monday against Fr. Tolton Catholic High School. Tolton won the second scrimmage 9-7. The two scrimmages were the first games for both teams.
The first day of classes are held at Muriel Williams Battle High School on Monday, including a leadership class which teaches students about the skills they will need to take on leadership roles at the school.

Bella's Pet Carnival was outside the MU Animal Science Building on Sunday. It was sponsored by No Kill Columbia's Spay and Neuter Project. The carnival is named after Bella Harver because she came up with the idea for the event.
The third day of the Calvary Episcopal Charity Horse Show was Saturday at the Boone County Fairgrounds. Horses and riders were competing for championship titles. Winning horses at the Calvary Episcopal Charity Horse Show received a ribbon around their neck and another pinned to their bridle. The show hosted many different categories, including Friesian English Pleasure riding, Stock Seat Equitation and Hackney Pony Pleasure Driving.
Artists Kris and Al Clement were selling things from wine goblets to tea pots to knitting bowls at their booth, Clement Clayworks, as part of the Art in the Park festival on Sunday at Stephens Lake Park. They throw 12 tons of clay a year to make enough pieces to sell at the 30 or so art shows they attend throughout the year around the country. Children who visited the "Young Collectors Tent" were allowed to chose a small piece of art and then meet the artist who made it.

The Missouri Contemporary Ballet is rolling out a contemporary interpretation of the classic story "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." The final performance takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Competitors such as Justin Goolsby traveled to MU Recreation Center to compete in the powerlifting event on Saturday for the Special Olympics Missouri State Summer Games. For Goolsby, being a powerlifter in Special Olympics means he gets to compete in front of friends and family, and he has a way to fill his day. "It gives me something to do, keeps me out of trouble, gives me a chance to travel," he said. "It's just beautiful."
The 55th annual Art in the Park was held Saturday at Stephens Lake Park. Some attendees were able to create their own projects and take them home. The show continues from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Animals such as Lindsey Williamson's American Saddlebred horse, Rusty, and Jane Gaines' Jack Russell Terrier, MacKenzie, were blessed by church leaders during the Calvary Episcopal Charity Horse Show on Saturday at the Boone County Fairgrounds.

Special Olympics Missouri held the opening ceremony of its annual State Summer Games on Friday night at the MU Student Recreation Complex.
Participants competed in volleyball for the Special Olympics Missouri State Summer Games. Greene County Sheriff's Department deputies awarded medals to the players.
Employees of Wilson's Fitness Center cleaned up after flooding Friday.
The Columbia Fire Department rescued a woman from her house near Northland Drive and Argyle Road on Friday morning after being trapped by flood waters. Her name was not available.
