Buffy Atkins

Buffy Atkins died Sunday, March 11, 2007, of natural causes. She was 54.
Ms. Atkins was born Feb. 6, 1953, in Popular Bluff.
She attended Hickman High School and graduated in 1971. She graduated from Stephens College in 1975.
Ms. Atkins worked at Roth’s Department store, a family-owned retail business in Columbia, from age 14. She moved from management at Roth’s to manage Buffy’s for Children. Buffy’s closed in 1999.
She graduated from massage school in 2005 as a nationally-certified massage and bodywork therapist.
Ms. Atkins began working for Columbia Public Schools in 2003.
She was a licensed foster parent in Boone County from 1975 until 2005 and shared her life with more than 40 foster children. She was a strong advocate for abused children
Ms. Atkins worked as a mentor for Sharing our Strengths and developed a special interest in helping children with Reactive Attachment Disorder.
Ms. Atkins is survived by four adopted daughters, Amy and Cary, of Columbia, Holly, of Hallsville, and Lindsay, of Phoenix; three adopted sons, Tyler, of Washington, D.C., Abe, of St. Louis, and Jay, of Columbia; her mother, Donna Atkins, of Poplar Bluff, and father, Charles Atkins of Columbia; and two brothers, Doug Atkins, of Naperville, Ill., and David Atkins, of Osage Beach.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.
