Dr. Stephen Francis Whitted

COLUMBIA — Dr. Stephen Francis Whitted of Columbia died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009. He was 95.

He was born Sept. 30, 1914, in Mulvane, Kan., to Wiley Arthur and Mae (Sharp) Whitted.

He married Emogene Swearengin on Aug. 4, 1946, in Seymour.

Dr. Whitted was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

He served in the Army's 102nd Infantry Division during World War II in the South Pacific. He left active duty April 6, 1948. As lieutenant colonel, he served the Missouri National Guard for several years before retiring Sept. 30, 1974.

He was also a professor at MU, appointed to the faculty in the department of agricultural economics. He retired from that position in 1977.

Dr. Whitted is survived by his daughter, Catherine Collins of Des Moines, Iowa; one brother, Harold Whitted of Fresno, Calif.; three grandchildren, Courtney Hillyard of Chicago, Jordan Collins of Des Moines, Iowa, and Cayli Collins of Denver; and one great-grandson, Nicholas Hillyard of Chicago.

His wife, a sister and two brothers died earlier.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will follow at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
