Dilla Lue Maupin

Dilla Lue Maupin knew the importance of family after raising five children. She was known for hosting major family gatherings such as birthdays and holidays for her extensive family that included 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Although Mrs. Maupin had many grandchildren, she devoted her time to other children as a foster grandparent at Shepard Boulevard Elementary and served as Sunday school superintendent for many years.

Mrs. Maupin died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, in her home. She was 81.

She was born Nov. 24, 1927, in Columbia to Walter and Rosa Lee Burnett Enochs. She married Walter Harvey Maupin on June 21, 1945, in Columbia. She was a member of First Assembly of God church and was a lifetime member of Boone Hospital Center Auxiliary.

Mrs. Maupin showed her devotion to her children by putting their needs before hers. She was a stay-at-home mother and enjoyed playing board games such as Scrabble with her kids. She also encouraged outdoor pursuits.

“When we were growing up, we always went with my mom to my grandmother’s farm on school holidays,” her daughter Nancy Hoskins said. “We would go on hikes together and hunt for bittersweets.”

Not only did Mrs. Maupin enjoy spending time with her family, but she also never ceased to amaze them with her intelligence.

“She had to quit school in ninth grade to help support her family,” Hoskins said. “She went back in her 50s and didn’t tell any of us and got her GED. She was very intelligent.”

Mrs. Maupin enjoyed reading, decorating and sewing. She made most of her children’s clothing; she even created Hoskins' wedding dress by putting it together from pieces of different dresses.

She spent 15 years as president of Ridgeway Elementary PTA, which daughter Sharon Phillips said that Mrs. Maupin was very proud of.

Her parents and a sister, Elizabeth Louise Hendren, died earlier. Mrs. Maupin is survived by her husband; three sons, Harvey Maupin of Columbia, Michael Maupin of Ashland, and Scott Maupin of Sacramento, Calif.; two daughters, Nancy Hoskins of Columbia and Sharon Phillips of Eldon.

“I’m very blessed to have had her for 63 years,” Hoskins said. “She had a big heart, was a hard-working mom and was just always there.”

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 at First Assembly of God church, 1100 N. Seventh St. in Columbia. The Rev. Dave Smith will conduct services. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 25 at the church. Burial will be at New Salem Cemetery.
