Jack Vernon Shaw

COLUMBIA — Jack Vernon Shaw of Columbia fished any time he could at Bennett Springs, but on opening day of the season in 1993 he hit the jackpot. Mr. Vernon caught the biggest fish of the day, a whopper of a trout weighing in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces.

Mr. Shaw had a passion for the outdoors, especially trout fishing and quail hunting. He and his wife, Lois Shaw, spent many weekends at a trailer they owned at Bennett Springs.

Mr. Shaw died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Boone Hospital Center. He was 81.

He was born Oct. 13, 1928, in Boone County to Roy and Lennie (Merkel) Shaw.

On Sept. 3, 1949, he married Lois Dean Watson in Columbia.

Mr. Shaw was a member of the of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, Missouri/Kansas Local 15 Chapter 11, for 58 years.

He worked at various construction and masonry companies in Columbia including Dean Hathman Masonry Co., Simon Masonry, Jack Heibel Masonry Inc. and McGlasson Brothers Construction Co.

Mr. Shaw is survived by his wife; three daughters, Lanetta Woodland of Jefferson City, Loretta Forsee and Nancy Palmer, both of Columbia; two sons, Vernon Shaw of Harrisburg and Troy Shaw of Columbia; a brother, Robert “Buddy” Shaw; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

His brothers Roy “Edward” Shaw, Wesley Shaw and Alfred Shaw died earlier.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Parker Funeral Service. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Dennis Swearingin of Olivet Christian Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Harrisburg.
