Dr. Jim Craigmile

Professor, war veteran and world traveler Dr. Jim Craigmile of Columbia died Saturday, July 17, 2010. He was 85.

He was born on April 8, 1925, to J. Lee and Mildred Craigmile in Tarkio, Mo. He graduated from Tarkio High School, joined the Army and served in France and Germany as part of the 14th Armored Division during World War II.

He attended Shrivenham American University in England and graduated with honors from Tarkio College in 1949. He then received his master's degree at the University of Cincinnati and his doctorate from the University of Nebraska.

Dr. Craigmile met his wife, Barbara, while working at Yellowstone National Park. The two were married from 1951 until Mrs. Craigmile's death in 2001.

He was a principal in Nebraska and a professor with MU's department of educational administration from 1959 until his retirement in 1992. He also worked with the Ministry of Thailand on two separate tours and served as the faculty adviser to the Thai Student Association. He was an elder of the Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Craigmile is survived by three sons, Steve Craigmile and Paul Craigmile of Columbia and Joe Craigmile of Joplin; and eight grandchildren. One son, David Craigmile, died earlier.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, located at 1600 W. Rollins Road.
