John Thomas Jones Jr.

COLUMBIA – John Thomas Jones, Jr., could bowl a perfect game.

Mr. Jones worked for 33 years at GTE Corporation, formerly known as General Telephone & Electronics Corporation. He retired in 1987.

“After he retired, he was mainly involved in bowling,” said his wife, Rosa. Mr. Jones was inducted into the Columbia Bowling Hall of Fame in 2003 and was also a member of the Missouri State Bowling Association.

In addition to bowling, Mr. Jones enjoyed traveling. “We did travel for several years after his retirement with our own camper and all,” Mrs. Jones said. “We traveled through the West quite a bit for 10 years after he retired.”

Mr. Jones died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010. He was 82.

He was born to John Thomas Jones Sr. and Elizabeth Betty Wells Jones on Oct. 27, 1927, in Barrett, Kan.

Mr. Jones joined the Navy in 1945 after high school and served for a year and a half in World War II.

He married his wife Rosa on July 15, 1950. They had seven children.

Mr. Jones’ son Robert Strader, a brother and a sister died earlier.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosa, of Columbia; three sons, Floyd H. Strader of Columbia, John E. Jones and his wife, Jane of Overland Park, Kan., and Charles D. Jones and his wife Nancy of Columbia; three daughters, Patricia E. Strader of Denver, Mary E. Hill and husband, Jerry of Huntsville, Mo., and Janice F. Wasinger and husband, Mike of Denver; 14 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010,added date - JMS at Parker Funeral Service, located at 22 N. 10th St., Columbia. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Columbia, Mo.
