Bob Edwin Chaney

COLUMBIA - Bob Edwin Chaney could listen to a car and know what was wrong with it.

“He was a very good mechanic,” his sister, Edna Fountain, said.

Mr. Chaney, 82, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010. He was 82 years old.

Mr. Chaney was born on April 9, 1928 in St. Louis. He grew up on a farm as one of seven children. He went to work as a mechanic for Chrysler without having received any special training or education, Fountain said. He later worked for Pontiac, Volkswagen and the University of Missouri.

Mr. Chaney married Dorothy Rice on Feb. 2, 1946. They raised their three children in Columbia, and were married for 56 years until she died.

Mr. Chaney was an active, longtime member of the Columbia and Boonville Seventh-day Adventist Church.

“He sang for church all the time,” Fountain said. “He loved to play the guitar and sing. He loved life.”

When not playing his guitar, Mr. Chaney was often seen with his dog, Pete. A loving pet owner, he took Pete for car rides and trained Pete to kiss him on the cheek.

Mr. Chaney is survived by his oldest son, Gary, and his wife, Alida, and their children, Tricia, Justin, Scott, Hailey and Ali, all of Alamosa, Colo.; his son Bob, Jr., and his wife, Geri, and their children, George, Cole and Spencer of Anchorage, AK; his daughter LaDonna LaVenture, and her husband, Rick, and their children, Rick and Ashley of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Edna Fountain, of Boonville, Mo and Juanita Robertson of LaSierra, Calif.; many nieces, nephews and friends; and his dog, Pete.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70. Pastor Rick LaVenture and Pastor Sam Whatley will conduct the services. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, next to Mr. Chaney’s wife, Dorothy.
