COLUMBIA — Evelyn Jane Young always called herself an "out-of-the-box thinker."
“She had a lot of crazy adventures in her life,” said her daughter-in-law Lori Young. “She was spontaneous.”
Evelyn Jane Young of Columbia died of cancer on Monday, Oct. 11, 2010. She was 72.
She was born Nov. 4, 1937, in Wolf Islandto Hubert and Jennie Lee Hicks. She moved to Columbia when she was 12 years old.
A 1956 graduate of Hickman High School, Mrs. Young attended Columbia College and graduated from MU, earning a bachelor's degree in education. She went on to teach at many Columbia elementary schools.
She married Bill Young on May 1, 1959, in Columbia.
Mrs. Young was a member and past president of the Margaret Hart Circle of the King's Daughters, where she co-founded a dental aid program that provides care for needy children.
An avid bridge player, Mrs. Young earned the title of "Life Master," the highest level of bridge achievement.
She also loved to travel and visited nearly every continent, Lori Young said.
"She lived life to the fullest," she said. "She had many life-long friends."
Mrs. Young is survived by two sons, Will Young of Rogersville and Brad Young of Pleasant Hill; and four grandchildren.
Her husband, Bill Young; parents, Hubert and Jennie Lee Hicks; four brothers, William, Howell, James and Robert; and sister, Alice Elizabeth, died earlier.
Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Home, 217 Business Loop 70 W. A service will follow at 3 p.m.
