Gladys Leonia Hazell

Gladys Leonia Hazell, her family remembers, was always loving and kind. Mrs. Hazell, of Hartsburg, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010 at her home. She was 87.

Mrs. Hazell was born Oct. 19, 1922 in New Bloomfield to William and Georgia Nichols Morton. On Jan. 24, 1941, she married Lawrence Edman Hazell in Ashland. They were married until he died on June 5, 1971. Mrs. Hazell did not remarry.

Mrs. Hazell had six children, five sons and one daughter.

"I used to tease her for having all of these boys," said her daughter-in-law Laura Hazell. "I had a lot of talks with Gladys because we both had a love for babies."

Laura Hazell recalls one thing that Mrs. Hazell would always say of her children: "Every one of them is just precious."

"She was a loving and devoted mother that wanted to make sure that her family was taken care of first," said her son Robert Hazell. "She was beautiful physically and internally."

Mrs. Hazell spent her whole life as a farm trader and at the time of her death raised cattle.

An infant son, William Delbert Hazell, and her two brothers, Paul Morton and Cecil Harrison, died earlier.

Mrs. Hazell is survived by six children, Lawrence Daniel Hazell, Eddie Richard Hazell, Robert Hazell, Sam Hazell, Jimmy Hazell and Mary Alice Gilmore; three brothers, Winston Morton, Warren Morton and John Morton; a sister, Margaret Hughes; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Oct. 20 at Robinson Funeral Home in Ashland. The burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Missouri River Hospice, 1410 Heriford Road, Columbia, MO 65202, in care of the family.
