The first celebration of life for Irene B. Dugger will be on Dec. 19. A previous version of this obituary listed the wrong date for the service.

Irene B. Dugger of Columbia died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at Lenoir Woods Health Care Center. She was 95.

She was born Jan. 9, 1915, on a family farm near Bethel to Jennie and George Burckhardt. After earning a bachelor's degree from Park College and another from MU, she became a professor of home economics to both high school and college students.

In 1946, she married Harold H. Dugger, with whom she worked in Johnson City, Tenn., and later in Morrisville, Cape Girardeau and Columbia until his death in 1997.

She and her husband were known as devoted volunteers and active members of the church, school and community of each town where they lived. Those who knew Mrs. Dugger share the memory of her positive outlook and heartwarming smile.

She is survived by her daughter, Ellen Dugger, and her sister, Lorraine Hilgedick.

Mrs. Dugger was cared for at Lenoir Woods for the last 18 years of her life. In appreciation of the Lenoir staff, the family suggests donations to the Lenoir Christ Care Fund for employees, 3710 Lenoir St., Columbia, MO 65201, in lieu of flowers.

Contributions may also be made to PET, Columbia Area Older Adult Ministry or First Presbyterian Church of Columbia.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.

Celebrations of Mrs. Dugger’s life will be held in three different locations: at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Lenoir Woods Epple Chapel, 3710 Lenoir St. in Columbia; at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, 16 Hitt St.; and at 2 p.m. Jan. 9 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1820 Perryville Road, Cape Girardeau.
