Helen Louise Smith Burnham

Helen Louise Smith Burnham died Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, of pancreatic cancer at her home in Columbia. She was 57.

She was born Jan. 4, 1953, in Iowa City, Iowa, to J. Ned and Mary D. Smith.

She married William J. Burnham on Aug. 18, 1973, in Columbia.

Mrs. Burnham graduated from Hickman High School in 1971. She earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from MU in 1976.

Mrs. Burnham was a social worker for the Visiting Nurses, Boone County Health Department, Ronald McDonald House and worked most recently as a bereavement social worker for Missouri River Hospice.

In her spare time, Mrs. Burnham enjoyed gardening, cooking, photography, swimming and traveling. She was also active in the Atkins-Hubble-McRoberts circle of the King’s Daughters. Mrs. Burnham was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and friend.

Mrs. Burnham is survived by her husband; two sons, Spencer Burnham of Denver and Morgan Burnham of Columbia; two daughters, Emily Burnham of Denver and Katie Burnham Wilkins of Columbia; her mother, Mary D. Smith of Columbia; and a brother, Bruce Smith of Austin, Texas.

Mrs. Burnham's father and a daughter, Nora Burnham, died earlier.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Missouri United Methodist Church, 204 S. Ninth St. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St.
