Mary Anastasia "Ann" Karrer

Mary Anastasia “Ann” Karrer of Columbia died at her home Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010. She was 96.

She was born Nov. 3, 1914, in Prairie Town, Ill., to John and Emma Graham. She was the oldest of 11 children.

She graduated from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Nursing School in Granite City, Ill., in 1937. She married Ralph G. Karrer on Feb. 14, 1943.

She was a devout Catholic who was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus auxiliary and the Daughters of Isabella. She was a Eucharistic minister for her church and volunteered with Meals on Wheels, serving the sick and injured until she retired from driving.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ruth “M.R.” Karrer and partner Tim Neds, and Mary Ann Williamson; two sons, Daniel Karrer, and Gary Karrer and wife Teri; three sisters, Ethel Gerteneckter and husband Milton, Doris O’Brien, and Shirley Lexow and husband Don; two brothers, Clem Graham and wife Alice, and Jerry Graham and wife Eileen; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Four brothers, John, Leo, Homer and infant Patrick Graham; a sister, Agnes Eaker; and a great-granddaughter, Karra Paige, died earlier.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 903 Bernadette Drive. A celebration of life will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be held at Columbia Cemetery, 30 E. Broadway.

Memorial contributions may be made to Columbia Catholic School, 817 Bernadette Drive, Columbia, MO, 65203; the Women of Lourdes, 903 Bernadette Drive, Columbia, MO, 65203; or in the form of letters sent to Missouri Senator Kurt Schaefer and Representative Jeannie Riddle in support of the passage of Karra’s and Jocelyn’s Law.
