H. Leroy Nickerson
COLUMBIA — H. Leroy Nickerson of Columbia died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, at his home. He was 68.
Mr. Nickerson was born Aug. 19, 1942, in Salisbury to William and Valera Lingo Nickerson.
He married Agnes Mank on Aug. 14, 1965.
Mr. Nickerson graduated from Salisbury High School in 1960 and attended Central Methodist College in Fayette. He worked as a laborer and driver in many different professions and recently retired as an employee of the city. After his retirement, he volunteered with the Columbia Parks and Recreation Bell Choir, Choir and Adapted Bell Choir.
Mr. Nickerson was also a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and United Food and Commercial Workers Local 655.
“He (was) generous. He was quiet," said Jerome Sander, a longtime friend of Mr. Nickerson and who attended Bible study with him. “He is the kind of person that will just do anything for you, but he’s just quiet and never bragged about it."
Mr. Nickerson enjoyed camping, fishing and cutting wood as well as going to dinner theaters, a type of entertainment that combines restaurant meals and musical shows.
“His greatest passion is his kids," said David Neville, Mr. Nickerson’s friend and fellow member of Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes; a son, Eric Nickerson; and a daughter, Maria Michelle Nickerson and her son, Devin.
A brother, Gary Nickerson, and a sister, Judy Boley, died earlier.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Monday with services following at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 903 Bernadette Drive. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.
