Carol Ann Porter

Carol Ann Porter, an employee of University Hospital and Clinics, loved playing sports growing up.

“She was really athletic. She loved to play softball and basketball when she was a child,” Betty Porter, Carol's mother, said.

Her love of sports continued into adulthood, long-time friend Debbra Jordan said. She was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Ms. Porter died at Boone Hospital Center on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011. She was 52.

Born in Columbia, Ms. Porter attended Hickman High School. She graduated in 1976.

Living in her hometown, Ms. Porter was able to spend time with her friends and family, one of her favorite pastimes.

“Carol loved people. She had her girlfriends and loved to spend time with them, but there wasn’t a day she didn’t come by to visit her family,” Betty Porter said.

Friends and family remembered Ms. Porter as a “kind, compassionate woman.”

“She was always so cheerful, and she loved children," Jordan said. "She would do anything for a child. Whatever she had, she would give it to them."

Ms. Porter was survived by her parents, Clarence and Betty (Stapleton) Porter of Columbia; a brother, Charles E. Porter of Columbia; and two sisters, Christy Porter of Columbia and Brenda Logan of St. Joseph.

Her sister, Loretta J. Anderson, died earlier.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the H.T. May and Son Funeral Home, 2207 Holly Ave. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 501 Park Ave.
