Della Spees
Della Spees died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011. She was 83.
She was born June 14, 1927, on a farm near Plevna to Noble and Pauline Rouner. Mrs. Spees graduated from Edina High School in 1944, where she excelled academically and participated in several extracurricular activities. Mrs. Spees was in the girls' glee club, played trombone in the marching and concert bands, and lettered in basketball.
Mrs. Spees later received a teaching certificate from Culver-Stockton College in Canton, and taught elementary school in Novelty and Plevna.
She married Sam Spees on June 15, 1947. They had two children, Suzanne and Teresa. In August 1951, the Spees family moved to Columbia.
Mrs. Spees was an avid bowler and an accomplished golfer. She golfed with her husband at the Columbia Country Club and once made a hole-in-one.
Mrs. Spees was a kind, loving mother and wife. She had a wonderful sense of humor, love of nature and a competitive spirit.
Della Spees is survived by her husband, Sam Spees; two daughters, Suzanne Spees and her husband, Nick Corry, of Ashland, and Teresa Raines and her husband, Mark Raines, of Scott City; two granddaughters, Amanda Henderson of Havana, Ill., and Erin Wolfhope and her husband, Jeff Wolfhope, of Hickory, N.C.; and a cousin, Mike Taylor of Pleva.
A sister, Dorothy Snelling, died earlier.
Visitation will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will follow at 2 p.m. Mike Taylor, Gayle Lampson, Robert Miller, Mark Raines and Nicholas Corry are honorary pallbearers.
Donations can be made in honor of Mrs. Spees to the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society.
