HALLSVILLE — Robert Larry Clemens was an honest man.
"Never run across a more honest man in your whole life," remembered Bruce Moore, Mr. Clemens' friend for more than 25 years. "You could trust him with your life."
Robert Larry Clemens of Hallsville died Friday, March 11, 2011, at his home. He was 66.
He was born Feb. 21, 1945, in Columbia to Robert L. and Helen Blackburn Clemens.
Mr. Clemens graduated from New Franklin High School in 1963 and later served in the Marine Corps. After working as a pressman for American Press and Kelly Press, Mr. Clemens worked for the Columbia Missourian press room from 1976 until retiring in 2007, then briefly for the circulation department part time.
Mr. Clemens married Cathie Hombs on Nov. 9, 1968, in Fayette.
He was a member of Center Point Church in Columbia.
Mr. Clemens put family first.
"Sons and grandchildren are the things in his life he held dear," Moore said.
An avid lover of the outdoors, Mr. Clemens and Moore would often hunt deer and rabbit in Prairie Home.
"He was really a super person, a lot of fun," said Eddie Cook, who worked with Mr. Clemens at the Missourian. "He like to joke around and loved hunting and fishing."
Mr. Clemens is survived by his two sons, Rusty Clemens and wife, Kelly, of Columbia and Robert Clemens of Hallsville; a sister, Karen Johnmeyer and companion, David Straight, of Columbia; a brother, Greg Clemens and wife, Carol, of Columbia; a sister-in-law, Judy Clemens of Columbia; six grandchildren, Brooklyn, Samantha, Reid, Taylor, Carleigh and Katlyn; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Clemens' wife; a brother, Wayne Clemens; companion, Sandy Young; a grandson, Corey; a brother-in-law, David Johnmeyer; and a nephew, Phillip Johnmeyer, died earlier.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, and the burial will follow in the Harrisburg city cemetery, near Route 124 and Route F.
