Michael Jon Dyer

COLUMBIA — Michael Jon Dyer of Columbia died Sunday, May 1, 2011. He was 62.

He was born Nov. 25, 1948, in Black Oak, Ky., to George Lewis and Louise Liza Lucille Burke Dyer.

Mr. Dyer moved to Columbia in 1979, from Bloomington, Ind. He worked as a nurse at University Hospital and in home health in Columbia for many years. He then worked in restoration and remodeling construction.

Mr. Dyer was always there to lend a helping hand with an open, giving and loving heart, his family said. He never met a stranger and loved to talk to everyone.

“He liked to talk to people, and he always had stories to tell,” his friend Nancy J. Antonio said. "He loved music and animals."

Mr. Dyer is survived by long-time companion Nancy J. Antonio; a son, Robert L. Dyer and his wife, Tah-Nee; a daughter, Paula Kay Dyer of Columbia; nine grandchildren, John Paul Rombach, Meggan Ishmael, Kayla Sue Dyer, Megan Alexandra Accola, Dakota Dale Dyer, Jeramiah Nole, Matthia Ricketts, Robert Aaron Dyer and Georgia Ann Dyer; one great-grandchild, Gianna Munzo; several nieces and nephews; and many adopted children and grandchildren.

His parents, one sister and 11 brothers died earlier.

A celebration of Mr. Dyer's life will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Collins Shelter at Stephens Lake Park, 2001 E. Broadway.
