Gladys Mae Young
COLUMBIA — Gladys Mae Young of Columbia died Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at her home. She was 73.
Gladys Mae Young was born on Oct. 18, 1937, in Sturgeon, Mo, to Clay Hayes Sr. and Dorothy Mae (Tinder) Hayes.
She married Wallace Young on Dec. 23, 1962, in Columbia.
Mrs. Young’s passion was her family and the many children she cared for, especially her grandchildren. She also loved to fish and was a longtime senior choir member at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church. Throughout her life, she worked as a housekeeper in several private homes and hotels. At one time, she was an elevator operator in The Tiger Hotel.
Mrs. Young is survived by a son, Robert L. (Jynn) Young of Columbia; a daughter, De Ann Young of Columbia; two grandchildren, Christopher Young and Kiara Baker-Clay, both of Columbia; four brothers, Ben Harris, Wayne Harris, Darnell Harris and Delbert Harris, all of Columbia; eight sisters, Barbara Kelly, Mary Bernice Warren, Cornelia Hayes, Janice Palmer, Sondra Sheard, Dondra Vasquez and Marilyn Marks, all of Columbia, and Delores Harris Cooper of Aurora, Colo.; and her stepmother, Mary Jane Harris of Columbia.
Her husband, Wallace Young, sister Helen Brown and brother Clay Hayes Jr. died earlier.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Millard Family Funeral Home, 12 E. Ash St.
Services, conducted by the Rev. James Gray, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 702 Banks Ave. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.
