Carl Wayne Nichols

COLUMBIA – Carl Wayne Nichols of Hallsville died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Boone Hospital Center. He was 58.

He was born Feb. 24, 1953, in Columbia to Paul and Mae Nichols. He was one of five children and had a sister and three brothers. Mr. Nichols married Sherry Murry on May 8, 1971.

Mr. Nichols worked for MU as a cement mason with his brothers for the last 11 years and worked at Columbia Curb & Gutter Co. for 30 years before that. Paul Nichols, one of Mr. Nichols' older brothers, said he was a hard worker who worked until the day his body would not allow it anymore.

Mr. Nichols was a part of a very tight-knit family whose members all live in mid-Missouri. He and his son, Jason Nichols, fixed up an old barn to create a family watering hole they call the Tiger Den, where the family enjoyed rooting for the Tigers and barbecuing.

Mr. Nichols was also a recreational golfer and would travel around mid-Missouri with his brother and friends to several courses.

Paul Nichols described his brother as a hard worker but also as someone who liked to joke and have fun. The Tiger Den, family and work were the most important things in his life.

Mr. Nichols served in the Armed Forces and will be buried with military honors.

Mr. Nichols is survived by his wife, Sherry Nichols; a son, Jason Nichols; three brothers, Paul and Robert Nichols, both of Hallsville, and Mark Nichols of Boonville; and two grandchildren, Lauren and Kale Nichols of Hallsville.

His parents, Paul and Mae Nichols; a sister, Donna Nichols; a step-sister, Jan Nichols; and a nephew, Chris Stephens, died earlier.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at Parker Funeral Home, 22 N. 10th St. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
