Ruby M. Stone: Former MU Athletic Department employee known for personality, volunteer work

COLUMBIA — Ruby M. Stone had a frank personality and never complained about the small things.

Mrs. Stone, of Columbia, died Friday, July 8, 2011. She was 84.

Mrs. Stone was born Aug. 12, 1926, in Boone County to Robert J. and Lucille (Vanlandingham) Proctor.

She graduated from Hickman High School in 1944 and married Raymond Stone in San Diego two years later on March 11, 1946.

She was an employee at the MU Athletic Department ticket office for 25 years until she retired in 1991. She loved her work and enjoyed sharing stories about her job with others.

Dick Walls Sr., owner of Boone Tavern in downtown Columbia, knew Mrs. Stone from when she worked at the ticket office.

He said that back in her time, the 1960s through the '80s when things were done with a handshake, she was never in charge of the ticket office, but she knew more people from the public than those in charge.

Mrs. Stone volunteered for many organizations, most recently the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center.

Walls said, “I saw her occasionally after retirement; super lady.”

Mrs. Stone is survived by three nephews, Bill Bruenig of Addison, Texas, and Martin L. and Robert Bruenig, both of Arlington, Texas; and one niece, Julie Kauffmann of St. Louis.

Her husband, Raymond Stone, and sister, Ruth Bruenig, died earlier.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at Parker Funeral Services, 22 N. 10th St. A burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.

Memorials can be sent to the MU Sinclair School of Nursing, Office of Development, S219 School of Nursing, Columbia, MO 65211.
