Patricia Kraff: Nurse, educator enjoyed volunteering

Patricia Kraff died Sunday, July 3, 2011, at the age of 72.

Her husband, Mike Kraff, described her as an active volunteer who donated her time to many places in the 34 years she lived in Columbia.

Mrs. Kraff was born Oct. 26, 1938, to Jack and Dorothy (Shea) Brandenburg and went to school in Fairbury, Neb., where she graduated high school in 1956. She went on to college, eventually graduating from Omaha University with a bachelor's degree in nursing.

During her time at Omaha University, she met Mr. Kraff, an Air Force officer attending a military education program at the university. They were married in Mrs. Kraff's hometown of Fairbury on Aug. 26, 1961.

In 1977, Mr. Kraff resumed civilian life, and the two moved to Columbia.

Mrs. Kraff resumed her education in Columbia, eventually earning a master's degree in health education and counseling psychology. She worked as a psychiatric nurse and health educator in a substance-abuse center and served as a nursing supervisor in a state mental hospital.

She enjoyed volunteering at the Upscale Resale shop of the Assistance League of Mid-Missouri. She also volunteered at the Museum of Art and Archeology and in the Bookbag Program, where she read books to children. Mr. Kraff said she loved to visit museums.

In retirement, she was involved in the Bernice Burkholder Book Club and the Bess Schooling Antique Group, two programs that are a part of the Fortnightly Club, an organization of women affiliated with MU faculty.

She is survived by her husband, Mike Kraff of Columbia; her son, Kevin, and his wife, Leslie, of Los Angeles; her brother, Jerry Brandenburg, and his wife, Sherrie, of Fairbury, Neb.; grandchildren, Summer and Forrest; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services were held Friday, July 8, 2011, at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home at 2414 H Street in Fairbury, Neb., by Parker Funeral Service and Crematory. A life memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia, 2615 Shepard Blvd. Mrs. Kraff was buried at Fairbury Cemetery, 56924 Pwf Road in Fairbury, Neb.
