Leland Smithson Salamon

Leland Smithson Salamon of Columbia died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011. She was 99.

She was born in Exeter on Oct. 20, 1911, to Earl Lee and Leland Jane (Jordan) Smithson.

She married Francis Joseph Salamon on May 20, 1944, in Chicago.

“The most important thing to her would be her family and friends,” said her niece Jane Foland Poore.

Mrs. Salamon did not have any children, but she treated Poore like her own daughter. The two lived together in Chicago where Mrs. Salamon worked as a comptroller for the Commodity Exchange Authority. After she retired in 1971, she and her husband, Frank, moved to Rogers, Ark.

Mrs. Salamon moved to Columbia after her husband's death in 1988. She moved between Rogers and Columbia over the next 23 years to be near her family in both places.

Mrs. Salamon is survived by two nieces, Jane Foland Poore and her husband, Don, of Columbia, and Linda Smithson Dooley and her husband, Tom, of Cushing, Okla.; two nephews, Stephen Kelso Foland and his wife, Judy, of Crofton, Md., and Carl Edward Smithson and his wife, Bonnie, of Springfield; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Among them are Kimberly Shaw Brown and her husband, Chuck, of Ashland; Carl James “C.J.” Poore of Columbia; Kevin Blake Poore and his wife, Cheryl, of Columbia; and Kelsy Dawn Poore and partner Matt Perry of Jefferson City.

Her husband; sister, Jane Smithson Foland; brothers, Don Earl Smithson and Frank Lee Smithson; niece Carol Smithson Arms; and nephews Robert Lee Smithson and Wayne Henry Smithson died earlier.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Maplewood Cemetery on State Highway MM in Exeter.
