Phyllis Elaine Leiby

For 20 years, Phyllis Elaine Snideman Leiby dedicated her time to her work at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center.

Mrs. Leiby of Sturgeon died Monday, November 14, 2011. She was 78.

She was born on Jan. 11, 1933 to Ralph and Gladys Snideman. She married Ralph Leiby in Chester, Pa. in Dec. 1956.

"She took good care of my dad," her son Kevin Leiby said.

Mrs. Leiby was a baker and an active gardener. Her children said she stayed active by bowling and playing softball. Along with these activities, Mrs. Leiby served as the president of the Ladies' Auxiliary Chapter 280, and later as the District 2 president for two years.

As a mother, her son said she was very supportive. "Regardless of whether it was scouting or band, she was always supportive ... sometimes the referees thought she was too supportive."

She was strong-willed, her son said. She believed what she believed and she was not bashful to tell you if she thought you were wrong.

While the family lived in Sturgeon, her son said she played the organ at the Methodist church. She also was a pianist. She played for weddings and funerals among other things for the church.

Mrs. Leiby is survived by her husband, Ralph Leiby; three children, Kevin Leiby of Millersburg, Carla Fraga of Auxvasse and Roy Leiby of Harrisburg; two sisters, Donna Spotts of Cleburne, Texas and Elizabeth Sue McCracken of Redwood City, Calif.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 12 p.m. Friday at Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation begins at 10 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Ellis Fischel Cancer Center at 115 Business Loop 70.
