Mary Annette Florea

Mary Annette Florea was a kind, outgoing, hospitable and selfless person who put her family first.

"She was really more about other people than herself," said her son, Bill Florea. "She never wanted you to do anything for her. She always wanted to do things for you."

Mary Annette Florea of Columbia died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012. She was 84.

She was born Nov. 18, 1927, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to William and Mucie (Laudenbach) Year.

She graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls in 1945, and married Bruce Florea on Oct. 31, 1953, in Sioux Falls.

She volunteered for several organizations including Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was an active member and volunteer at Broadway Christian Church in Columbia and a longtime member of Philanthropic Educational Organization, a faith-based sisterhood that promotes women's education.

She served as president of the P.E.O. Chapter FZ in Pullman, Wash. She was a member of the P.E.O. Chapter LM in Columbia.

Mrs. Florea loved animals. She adopted several pets and donated to the Central Missouri Humane Society and Columbia Second Chance.

"She had a real soft spot for animals and felt a responsibility to provide them a good place to live, too," her son said.

Mrs. Florea and her husband, Bruce, were active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

She loved to sing in the Sweet Adelines in Pullman and the Boone Barbershop Belles in Columbia.

Mrs. Florea is survived by her daughter Nancy Whittaker and husband, Bruce, of Bellevue, Wash.; her son Bill and wife, Lara Florea, of Columbia; four grandchildren, Kelsey and Brynne Whittaker, and Kyra and Dane Florea.

Her husband, Bruce Florea, and brother, Dick Year, died earlier.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at Broadway Christian Church, 2601 W. Broadway in Columbia. Services will follow at 11 a.m.
