Betty Jean Burnett Landreth

COLUMBIA — Betty Jean Burnett Landreth of Columbia died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012. She was 71.

She was born July 31, 1940, in Columbia to Paul and Anna (McKenzie) Burnett.

Mrs. Landreth married Bill Walters on Jan. 7, 1957. She accepted his children as her own and had seven children with him.

Walters died Jan. 18, 1968, in a traffic accident.

Mrs. Landreth raised her children alone until May 1, 1971, when she married Tom Landreth, and their families grew to include each other's children. The couple had two daughters together.

As the eldest of a large, farming family, Mrs. Landreth learned the value of hard work and caring for others. Mrs. Landreth served others throughout her life. She worked at Columbia Regional Hospital and took care of patients for more than 20 years.

At home, she made family members quilts, afghans, cross-stitch pictures, cookies, homemade bread and fudge.

Mrs. Landreth is survived by her husband, Tom Landreth; her children, Ronnie Walters, Larry Walters, Gary Walters, Lois Dampier, Bettie Dale, Thomas Plaster, Richard Walters, Sandra Taylor, Sandi Landreth, Linda Landreth, Francis Walters, Billy Walters, Tommy Walters, and Linda Hendren; three sisters, Judy Denton, Marilyn Wyatt, and Connie Mauller and her husband, Harold; three brothers, Walter Burnett and his wife, Peggy, Roy Burnett and his wife, Linda, and Lonnie Burnett and his wife, Dorothy; and 98 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bill Walters, Mary Walters, Eddie Walters, Loy Alan, John Hartley and her parents died earlier.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Grandview Baptist Church, 8300 N. Route Z, Centralia. Services will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Grandview Baptist Church Cemetery.
