Columbia Independent School lists its mission as guiding "students in the pursuit of excellence through academic, physical, and creative achievement, while exemplifying a commitment to integrity, trust and responsibility; and to encourage students to realize the joy of living through personal achievement and service to others, in preparation for higher learning and community life."
The school opened in 1998 and includes a college preparatory curriculum. Classes include art, drama, foreign languages, language arts, Latin (beginning in sixth grade), mathematics, music, physical education, science, and social studies. Students in grades K-5, learn Spanish. All courses at the school are designated as honors courses.
When it opened, CIS held its lower school, grades K-5, classes at Sacred Heart Catholic Church's education building and its upper school classes at Hickman Hall on the Stephens College campus.
With the opening of a newly renovated building on North Stadium Boulevard in 2009, the school was able to combine its divisions.
Admissions to the school is based on an application, previous school record, a teacher evaluation(s), an interview, and an entrance exam for students in grades 6 to 12. Financial aid is offered to about one-third of the school's student body.
The school is accredited by the North Central Association and the Independent Schools Association of the Central States. It is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools.
