The school is named after John B. Lange, Jr., who helped to build the first permanent black school in Columbia.
In honor of the school's mascot, Lange has a Leopard Pride statement that reads, “Lange students are safe, responsible and respectful learners.”
The motto is “It is never okay to be disruptive or hurtful.” The middle school’s mission statement is “Lange Middle School, in partnership with family and community, will prepare students to be productive, contributing citizens in their school, community and society.”
