Shepard Elementary stands out because they make an effort to make sure families are connected. Principle JoNetta Weaver says that once a month, parents are invited to school for special events, and parent involvement is very high. This elementary school, located off Shepard Boulevard, tries to be as child centered as possible, especially in situations where they need to problem solve.

“We try to keep the child centered in the discussion and not ask what adults would do, but instead figure out what is best for the children,” says Principle Weaver.

The teachers have a high devotion to collaborative work, and work together as a team. Shepard Elementary has several veteran teachers who have taught for many years. Shepard is considered a community school, where all the parents and children are involved and know each other. Weaver believes that the students at Shepard can be seen as a small cross section of the U.S. .

Technology is integrated in Shepard’s classrooms because they bring the computer to the student, with the use of hand helds.

“We feel that by bringing the technology to the classrooms, we have a higher level of implementation,” says Weaver.

Right now, teachers share the few SMART Boards the school has, but with the passing of the bond issue, they are looking forward to more in the future.

Overall, Principle Weaver says the Shepard Elementary is a professional learning community.

“We continue to challenge each other and ask what the important learning piece is, which carries over into the classroom,” says Weaver.
