Opened in 1995, Smithton is one of three middle schools in the Columbia Public Schools district. Smithton takes its name from the township of Smithton, which existed between 1818 and 1821. The township area is now part of Columbia.

Located at 3600 Worley St., Smithton Middle School is home to slightly more than 900 students. The school’s mascot is the Wildcat, and its school colors are black and gold.

Smithton Middle School provides many programs, including a gifted-and-talented program, special-education classes and English-as-a-second-language classes. The special-education program includes provisions for autistic, gifted, emotionally challenged and physically challenged students, and also speech and language pathologists. As for other classes, the school offers many electives, such as art, band, choir, music, orchestra, keyboarding/typing and physical education.
