Thomas Hart Benton, the namesake for Benton Elementary, was a lawyer who served 30 years as a U.S. senator from Missouri. The first Benton School was in the original Littner building, at Hodge and Ripley streets, and was designed by William B. Littner of St. Louis in 1896. The building had only four rooms, but a new school was completed in 1927, and that is the current Benton Elementary School. A kindergarten room was added in 1957, and the office and library/media center were added in 1988 to the building on Hinkson Avenue.

Benton Elementary's mascot is the Bees. On average, the ratio of student to teacher is 17 students to one classroom teacher.
