Greenwell powers Mavs

Team MVP is the catalyst for the team’s victory against the Cheetahs.

The Mavericks Booster Club should have named Bill Greenwell the team MVP before every game.

After receiving the honor in a pregame ceremony, Greenwell led the Mavericks to an 11-4 victory against the Cook County Cheetahs on Wednesday at Taylor Stadium.

Greenwell went 4-for-4 with five RBIs.

“Those people take care of all (the awards) and I do what I can on the field,” Greenwell said. “The boosters have backed us all year through thick and thin, so it’s hard not to get nostalgic and want to do something special.”

Justin Stine (7-6) picked up the win, going 7 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking none.

“This was Stine’s last start of the season, possibly ever, so it was great for him to go out to an ovation,” manager Mark Schlosser said.

Stine will be over the league’s age limit, 26, on opening day, next season.

Mid-Missouri wasted no time scoring with Wes Fewell and Jake Whitesides scoring on Greenwell’s single up the middle in the first.

Whitesides had two RBIs in the second on a double and then scored from second on Greenwell’s single. Greenwell scored on Blake Blase’s single.

Greenwell added his fourth RBI of the night in the fourth.

The Cheetahs scored in the third when former Maverick catcher Andre Gomez scored from third on a wild pitch. Cook County added two more in the fifth, but the Mavs responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Cheetahs scored one more run in the seventh but reliever George Lehr came on in the eighth for the Mavericks and kept Cook County scoreless the final 1 1/3 innings.

“It’s been an up-and-down year, but it’s been a lot more fun to pick up wins the last couple nights,” Greenwell said.

The Mavericks Booster Club awarded the “Cy Young Award” to pitcher Grant Dorn and the “Rookie of the Year Award” to Jake Whitesides.

The Mavs (32-54) play their last home game of the season tonight at 7:05 at Taylor Stadium against the Cheetahs (40-46).

Fewell will try to play a different position each inning.
