PrintMid-Missourians got reacquainted with their windshield wipers Sunday afternoon as wet weather finally returned, creating slick driving conditions for many holiday travelers.
“Certainly any time you have a large volume of traffic and adverse weather conditions, that can be a contributing factor,” said Ken Hines, assistant fire chief for the Boone County Fire Protection District.
Columbia’s rainfall totaled one-half inch Sunday afternoon, with more rain expected today. The rain caused the National Weather Service to issue an overnight flash flood watch for the region.
“There’s potential for quite a bit of additional rain,” said Arno Perlow, an analyst with the National Weather Service. “The smaller creeks and tributaries are subject to flooding.”
Hines said the dangers are worse for people who do not know the area, such as holiday travelers.
An accident on Interstate 70 at the Perche Creek bridge around noon Sunday involved multiple vehicles going off the roadway with at least one injury. As traffic backed up along the interstate, two more accidents resulted. Scott Olsen, assistant fire chief for the Boone County Fire Protection District, said that location is extremely treacherous.
Another accident Sunday afternoon disrupted traffic on Providence Road and sent one person to Boone Hospital Center with minor injuries.
