PrintA suspect in a hit-and-run accident could face manslaughter charges after the death Sunday of the victim, a 73-year-old Columbia man.
Billy Ray McKinney was injured around 1:30 a.m. Aug. 23 when an SUV struck his vehicle, which had broken down on Hanover Boulevard, north of Clark Lane. Later that day, Anthony E. Hulen, 28, turned himself in to the police and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Hulen posted a $5,785 bond and was released from jail Aug. 24.
McKinney, who worked in the Columbia Missourian mailroom from 1988 until he retired in 2000, died at University Hospital.
Police are investigating whether McKinney’s death was caused by the accident, Sgt. Lloyd Simons said. If that is the case, Hulen could be charged with manslaughter, Simons said.
“It’s a real good possibility of additional charges,” Simons said.
Columbia police did not find the vehicle involved in the accident when searching Hulen’s home immediately after the accident, a police report said. The car, a dark SUV, was found on Aug. 25, after someone reported its location to CrimeStoppers, Simons said.
