The Hickman volleyball team won the St. Charles Invitational on Saturday, defeating St. Charles 25-6, 25-19 in the final.
In the semifinal, Hickman defeated McCluer North 25-12, 25-22.
The Kewpies defeated Ste. Genevieve 25-15, 25-23 in their first match, and then beat St. Charles 25-20, 20-25, 25-21.
On Friday, MU, ranked No. 18, defeated Utah Valley State 30-23, 30-24, 30-16.
Lisa Boyd had a career-high 12 kills, and teammate Jessica Vander Kooi led the team with five aces and 10 digs.
Forward Shea Swaboda scored the winning goal on an assist from midfielder Aria Hudetz.
MU’s Kristen Heil scored the first goal, but Purdue tied it 10 minutes later.
The Tigers, 3-0, play Arizona today at noon. Arkansas plays Purdue at 10 a.m.
Irrera’s winning goal came on a bicycle kick in the 96th minute off a pass from Ivan Radenkovik. Columbia College improved to 2-1.
In a letter to school president Robert Sloan and Baylor regents, former chairmen Glenn Biggs, Gale Galloway and Randall Fields write they have lost confidence in Sloan’s ability to “lead, inspire and unite” amid the fallout.
“Therefore, we urge Dr. Sloan to resign from his position as president of Baylor University,” the Sept. 2 letter reads. “If resignation is not forthcoming, we urge the board of regents to replace Dr. Sloan as president of Baylor University at the earliest opportunity.”
The letter comes as the board prepares to meet Thursday. The school’s faculty senate may also discuss a possible no-confidence vote regarding Sloan on Tuesday.
The meetings follow investigations into former basketball coach Dave Bliss’ attempt to cover up improper tuition payments paid to slain basketball player Patrick Dennehy.
Audiotapes secretly recorded by a former assistant coach revealed Bliss’ attempt to conceal the payments to Dennehy, who was found dead July 25 with two gunshot wounds to the head. Another former Baylor player, Carlton Dotson, has been indicted on a murder charge in Dennehy’s slaying and faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if convicted.
Bliss wanted the assistant coach and three players to lie to Baylor and NCAA investigators and say Dennehy was a drug dealer. He has resigned, and officials have said they found no evidence Dennehy sold drugs.
Tanaka hit a 3-wood from 258 yards within 6 feet on the 550-yard 17th to set up an eagle. He also had six birdies and five bogeys to finish at 7-under 203 on the hilly Hamilton Golf and Country Club course.
