Cyclists recover some of the stolen property near Hallsville
A group of cyclists riding in the MS 150 Bike Tour on Saturday discovered several discarded items that were stolen from a Boone County deputy’s home near Hallsville Friday, according to Boone County Sheriff’s Capt. Kevin Merritt.
Merritt declined to provide details about which of the stolen items the cyclists found in a ditch alongside the road in the 11200 block of Route Z southeast of Hallsville.
The sheriff’s department still has no suspects in the theft of two pistols and other items stolen from the deputy’s home, he said.
According to the department, the theft occurred at the deputy’s house between 4:40 and 10 p.m. Friday.
Also taken were a can of department-issued pepper spray, handcuffs and a flashlight, Merritt said.
Merritt declined to provide the name of the deputy, the address of the home or how the burglar got inside.
“He’s a victim just like anyone who’s not a law enforcement officer,” Merritt said.
The burglar or burglars probably knew a sheriff’s deputy lived in the home because a marked patrol car was parked in the driveway during the burglary, he said.
The sheriff’s department is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 875-TIPS or the Boone County Sheriff’s Department at 875-1111.
