The driver and passenger, both senior citizens from Illinois, sustained moderate injuries.
Rescue workers cleaned up the wreckage of an I-70 accident near Rocheport Thursday afternoon in which two senior citizens from Illinois were injured.
Driver Donald Clark, 71, sustained moderate injuries and was driven to University Hospital, Missouri State Highway Patrol reported. Enedina Clark sustained serious injuries and was flown to University Hospital in a medical helicopter.
Enidena Clark was in critical condition at University Hospital, and Donald Clark was in fair condition, hospital officials reported.
The accident happened when the driver overcompensated after driving into the median and hit a wall of bedrock on the other side of the lane, Missouri Highway Patrol Officials said.
Fire officials used hydraulic equiptment to cut a blood-spattered roof off of the vehicle and pull the driver and one passenger out.
They set up hoses expecting a fire but none occurred.
"We are very fortunate that we did not have a fire," said Ken Hines, Assistant Chief for the Boone County Fire Protection District.
The vehicle came to rest on its side, prompting rescue workers to use blocks of wood to stabilize it and prevent it from rolling over onto them while cleaning up the scene.
