PrintIt was an aggressive night for the Columbia College soccer team.
In a game littered with fouls, the Cougars defeated Benedictine 5-1 on Tuesday at Owens Soccer Stadium.
The Ra-vens had 21 fouls, three yellow cards and their goalkeeper, Brett Johnson, was ejected on a red card. The Cougars’ fouls came to 26 in addition to Jared Cross and Ivan Rad-enkovic receiving a yellow card.
“We had 11 fouls in the first 20 minutes,” Cougars coach John Klein said. “I made (the team) aware of the number. No soccer is being played at that rate.
“You have to play aggressive, not dirty, to be successful in men’s college soccer.”
Benedictine’s own goal in the seventh minute gave the Cougars the lead they held the rest of the game.
The second Cougars goal came from Matt Mueller in the 28th minute when the ball deflected off a Benedictine defensive player, giving Mueller the opportunity to score.
Joe Eckelkamp scored the Ravens’ goal in the 41st minute.
The score remained 2-1 until the second half in the 55th minute when Juan Pablo Irrera scored off a pass from Ben Boehner.
“In the second half, we stepped up play for each other and that’s what it takes to win,” Cross said. “We saw players come in off the bench and step in and take care of business.”
The fourth goal came on a low Boehner shot. Radenkovic had the assist.
Freshman Stephen McMullen scored his first goal and finished the Cougar scoring when he headed a ball into the goal off a cross from Micah Bolton in the 79th minute.
