Starting this weekend, the 44th Annual Boone County Art Show includes paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics and more. The show, cosponsored by Boone County National Bank and the Columbia Art League, features 275 works of art by 182 artists.
The popular choice award and the bank’s purchase award will be announced at 4:30 p.m. today in the lobby of Boone County National Bank on the corner of Eighth Street and Broadway. All of the entries will be on display in the lobby and selected works of art will remain on display through October.
Kathleen Desmond, a professor of art at Central Missouri State University, is judging this year’s show.
The winners in the category of professional painting were Jan Donati Wagner for “Amphibiolgy,” Travis Trokey for an untitled work and Nick Pena for “Impact Reconstruction.” Honorable mentions in this category were awarded to David Kuczynski and Robert Casati.
Winners in the professional drawing category were Carolyn Weber for an untitled work, Sara Hurlbert for “ ‘A’ Canal” and Taiyun Hsieh for “Winter Seashore.”
Awards in the category of professional media went to Brooke Cameron for “The Journey #3,” Carrie Nordlund for “Latent Containment” and Jessie Lawson for “Familiar Spirit.” Honorable mentions were awarded to Jan Donati Wagner and Chris Clemmensen.
The winners in the category of nonprofessional painting were Dean Larrick for “Columbia Culture,” Mary Jo Fritz for an untitled work, and Sarah McGehearly for “Self Portrait.” Mickey Burnam and Shannon Hale received honorable mentions.
Winners in the category of nonprofessional drawing were Holly Meyers for “Ballet,” Emily Hemeyer for an untitled work and Lindsay Winchester for “Downtown Construction.”
Awards in the category of nonprofessional other media went to Mark Yount for “Self Portrait,” Dawn Vaught for “Fulcrum Undone” and Julie Youmans for “Manimals.” Honorable mentions were awarded to Shannon Hale, Alice Krassensky, Eric Fritz, Sarah Froese, Lyn Vincent and Emily Hemeyer.
The winners in the category of sculpture were Carrie Nordlund for “Untitled, Seed Series 2,” Michael Marcum for “I Am Not a Refrigerator Magnet” and Don Asbee for “Song of the Savannah.” Robert Bussabarger and Heather Foot received honorable mentions.
Winners in the ceramics category were Puncky Heppner for “Wood Fired, Natural Ash Altered Bowl,” Norleen Nosri for “The Choir” and Karsten Ewald for “Raku Vase.” Honorable mentions were awarded to Yukari Kashihara, Amber Bradshaw and Yolanda Ciolli.
The winners in the category for fiber were Belinda Smith for “Helical,” Vicki Smith for “Three Begging Bowls” and Jenny Sennott for “Summer Sage Lace Runner.”
Mariel Stephenson was the winner of the Boone County Specialty for “Hinkson Creek.” Entries in this category must depict autumn in Boone County.
Julia Helvey, who has co-chaired the show with her husband, Bill, since the mid-1970s, said the winner of the Boone County Specialty must be a member of the art league. All of the other categories are open to Boone County residents, Art League Members from outside of Boone County and students who are 18 or older.
