Blue Springs South won its first Kewpie Classic championship Saturday night behind Cola Krueger’s dominant pitching.

The Jaguars defeated Blue Springs 7-1 in the title game at Cosmopolitan Park. The Wildcats defeated the Jaguars 2-0 in their previous contest.

Krueger struck out 13 and gave up two hits. Jill Krawczyk broke up Krueger’s perfect game in the sixth with a one-out single.

“She pitched real well and put four games together,” Jaguars coach Vicki Brummel said. “She stayed ahead in the count and kept the batters off balance.”

Krueger pitched every inning of Blue Springs South’s four tournament games and gave up one run.

Megan Simpson’s first-inning triple drove in Kaite Dickie for the Jaguars’ first run. Simpson was 3-for-4.

The Jaguars (18-4) added three more runs in the fourth on three singles, a double and pitcher Samantha Neely’s error.

Six consecutive singles brought in another three runs for Blue Springs South in the sixth.

Leigh Kaylor led the Jaguars with two RBIs. Dickie and Whitney Tap scored twice.

Rock Bridge (7-10) defeated Fort Zumwalt South in its first round matchup 3-2. The Bruins then lost its next two to Blue Springs 9-0 and Francis Howell 2-0.

Hickman (6-13) lost to Neosho in the first round 2-1. Pattonville beat the Kewpies 6-2 in the next round, and Park Hill handed Hickman its third loss of the tournament 5-2.

Rain and lightning Friday forced the tournament to play the bulk of its games Saturday. Every team was scheduled to play four games, but a lack of time caused the cancellation of several losers’ bracket games.
