The Hickman golfers shoot 41 in their final home match.
It was the last time Rachel Jacoby and Ashley Mansfield would play L.A. Nickell Golf Course for Hickman.
The Kewpies beat Marshall 174-204 on Thursday in their final home match.
Jacoby, a senior, shot her best nine-hole round of the season and tied for medalist at 41. Junior Payge Pleimann shared the honor.
Pleimann said she was happy to share medalist honors with Jacoby.
“Rachel’s been dying to show people what she can do out here,” Pleimann said.
Jacoby has been medalist in past years, but Thursday was the first time this season she had done so.
“I just wanted to finally prove myself,” Jacoby said. “Then I came here and it was a much more emotional thing than I anticipated.”
Jacoby said she was emotional before the round.
“I’ve invested four years in this; it’s all I do, it’s all I think about, and it’s over,” Jacoby said. “This is just me and my friends. It’s sad, it’s very sad.”
Jacoby would have had sole possession of medalist had she not struggled on the eighth hole.
Her tee shot sailed to the right on the par 4, stopping just to the right of the cart path. A punch shot was the only shot Jacoby had because she was under a tree. The shot tangled in the rough and rolled about 15 yards, leaving her with another punch shot.
Jacoby reached the green in four and two-putted for a double bogey.
Jacoby hit an estimated 250-yard drive on the par-4 fifth hole, which set her up for a short chip onto the green and two putts for par.
Mansfield, a senior, shot 44 to finish third. A gallery of 16 followed Mansfield and Pleimann.
“We just tried to not think about it because we knew if we thought about it, we’d freeze,” Mansfield said.
Mansfield struggled with her iron play, but said her putting helped save her round. Mansfield said she was sad to play in her final match, but it turned out better than it could have.
Pleimann said that she didn’t know how the seniors were feeling about the last home match, but she would miss having them on the team.
“I love those girls and I’m going to miss them so much when they’re gone,” Pleimann said.
Pleimann played consistently, making three pars and six bogeys. She had a short birdie putt on the fifth hole that lipped out.
Anita Sadhu shot 48 for the Kewpies’ fourth score.
Jenny Dehn led Marshall with a 45. Grace McCartney shot 50, Kate Finnegan shot 52 and Megan Kays shot 57.
Hickman is preparing for the district tournament Monday at Redfield Golf Course. The top two teams from each district advance to the state finals.
“This whole season has been preparing for state,” Mansfield said.
